Five Categories of Drug Use

There are various levels of drug abuse and addiction problems. Attending a drug rehab recovery program can help end an escalating drug abuse program and successfully help a long-term addict achieve lasting sobriety. Drug use can be categorized into five main areas, with most drug users falling into the experimental and recreational categories.

  • Experimental use: when a person tries a drug once or twice out of curiosity. Novice users run the risk of a lack of tolerance to the drug, and of not knowing how they will react, as well as the risks that may be associated with the effects of the drug.
  • Recreational use: where a person chooses to use a drug for enjoyment, particularly to enhance a mood or social occasion.
  • Situational use: where a drug is used to cope with the demands of particular situations. For example, amphetamines have been used by long distance truck drivers to maintain alertness and by athletes to gain energy. People who experience bereavement are often prescribed benzodiazepines (minor tranquillizers) to cope with grief.
  • Intensive use: also known as “bingeing”, where a person consumes a heavy amount of drugs over a short period of time, or use is continuous over a number of days or weeks.
  • Dependent use: where a person becomes dependent on a drug after prolonged or heavy use over time. They feel a need to take the drug consistently in order to feel normal, or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. Dependence can be psychological, physical, or both.

Saying Goodbye to 2013

It’s New Year’s Eve! This is a time to think back and reflect upon the last 365 days. What changes have you made in your life? What accomplishments have you succeeded in? For individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol it is likely that their answers will not be very positive.

Perhaps you have attempted to stop using on your own and found that your dependence on your substance of choice is much more powerful than you anticipated. Ending addiction to drugs and alcohol often requires help from professionals. While you may be able to stop using for a period of time on your own, maintaining sobriety without understanding: addiction, why you choose to abuse drugs or alcohol, addressing the reasons for your substance use and developing ways of preventing future drug use will result in your return to drug and/or alcohol use to solve your problems.

Maybe you stumbled on difficult times in your life and wound up relapsing? Losing your way on the road of lifelong sobriety doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to regain the footing you once had. For recovered addicts who have relapsed, it means that you know how to achieve being sobriety and must work on ways to maintain it: learning new stress management tools, relapse prevention techniques, being able to identify individuals who will cause harm to your sobriety and developing a plan for your day to day life as well as a long-term plan for your future.

Planning each day as well as what you want to accomplish in the future gives the individual something to focus on. Creating structure in one’s day is valuable to everyone, no matter if they are a recovering addict or someone who is struggling with depression (or any other psychological issues). Planning and scheduling one’s time helps them to know what is expected of them each day and their free time will be filled with enjoyable, healthy activities (reading books, watching movies, spending time with supportive friends and family). Having a plan for the future gives the person achievable goals to work towards and by accomplishing these goals gives the person a sense of success and pride; two very powerful emotions that will motivate them to continue on the road of sobriety instead of returning to a life of substance use.

Narconon Fresh Start and their staff at Fort Collins New Life Center in Colorado, Lone Star Victory Ranch in Texas, Rainbow Canyon Retreat in Nevada and Sunshine Summit Lodge in Southern California wish you and yours a very Happy New Year.

Rainbow Canyon Retreat Breaks the Chains of Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Rainbow Canyon Retreat, part of the Narconon Fresh Start network of drug rehab programs address all aspects of drug addiction and alcoholism. Their results, along with the other Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs are exceptionally higher than other addiction treatment programs. Many of those graduating from Rainbow Canyon Retreat are drug-free two years later; this is in contrast to the 16%-20% of more traditional rehabilitation treatment.

Because drug addiction and alcoholism are more prevalent in today’s society than in the past, drug rehab programs such as Rainbow Canyon Retreat must be effective at helping their clients get off drugs and learn to live a drug-free lifestyle. The grip of addiction knows no boundaries; affecting young and old, male and female, rich and poor. It is not uncommon for drug users to abuse multiple substances at the same time, becoming addicted to a combination of lethal drugs. Families suffer huge losses while the drug addict steals, lies, gets arrested and goes to jail. Many go through rehab, only to relapse after a short time.

An addict faces many hurdles on the road back from the insanity of drug addiction. So many in fact that, most drug addicts become overwhelmed along the way and fall back into using. Cravings, guilt and depression are the primary barriers that a drug addict encounters. These barriers are almost impossible to break free of, and cause him to remain in the enslavement of drug addiction.

One effective alternative method to recovery is the life skills training and moral inventory used by Narconon Fresh Start in all of their drug rehab centers including Rainbow Canyon Retreat. Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabilitation and education services provide a specific course of treatment which includes training in communication, a full body detoxification process, counseling in problem identification and solving, as well as counseling in personal values and integrity. Narconon Fresh Start programs assist individuals in accomplishing heightened moral standards and sobriety with an improved quality of life.

Rainbow Canyon Retreat breaks the chains of drug and alcohol addiction. Becoming drug free is only the first step of a long journey; the real task is helping the individual acquire the skills necessary to live life comfortably without drugs. We know the journey to recovery is not complete until the individual has a firm grasp of how to set and accomplish their goals. Rainbow Canyon Retreat drug rehab center provides the life skills necessary to become a contributing member of society again.

A Sunshine Summit Lodge graduate is someone who is…

  • Not left with the urge to relapse
The New Life Detoxification Program offered at all Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab centers (e.g. Sunshine Summit Lodge) addresses the physical aspect of relapse prevention. Clients go through a total body detoxification and purification process that flushes out the remaining drug residuals left behind by their substance abuse. The release of these drug toxins can happen at any point in the person’s recovery process or even years after they have been clean and sober. If not removed, these remaining drug metabolites will cause cravings when they are released into the client’s blood stream.Another part of Sunshine Summit Lodge’s drug rehab program is helping the program participant develop techniques that will aid them in avoiding relapse. Learning how to communicate effectively, how to focus on the present and future and not remain stuck in one’s past, developing the ability to confront the underlying issues that caused them to turn to drugs and provides them with the opportunity to clear their conscience of past transgressions and illicit behavior by taking full responsibility for their actions.
  • Able to live day to day without the use of medication
Sunshine Summit Lodge’s drug-free withdrawal, detoxification and rehabilitation procedure utilizes methods developed by Mr. Hubbard and is officially recognized in many countries as the most effective drug addiction treatment available.
  • Brought back to life
Within just a few days to a week of doing the New Life Detoxification Program (body cleansing and purification process), the participants have color back in their face, their eyes are brighter, their energy level increases and they are sleeping well at night, waking up the next morning feeling refreshed. The mood swings from anger to depression and general uncomfortability and anxiety levels diminish and many will say they feel more centered and balanced and more themselves again. Many of the participants will say that they have not felt this good, healthy, and alive since some earlier pleasurable time in their life when they were playing sports or other athletic activity.
  • Confident
Sunshine Summit Lodge uses Narconon Fresh Start’s life skills courses to educate their client’s on the communication skills necessary to confront and overcome the day to day problems associated with living drug-free. It gives the program participant the ability to be comfortable and confident within one’s self.
  • In control
During the program participants time in the course room they learn specific actions to repair the past and present conditions in their life. They are given the tools with which they can continue to improve their conditions and situations in their future.
  • Able to achieve their goals without the use of drugs
Sunshine Summit Lodge drug rehab is completely drug-free and does not use any drugs or medications to help their client’s achieve sobriety. Drug substitution is taking the addicted person off of one or multiple drugs and putting them on to other drugs that control their mood, sleep, anxiety level, energy level, etc. When it is all said and done, the person is still “controlled” by drugs.

For millions of individuals personally caught up in the trap of substance abuse or alcoholism, and the millions of others who are also directly or indirectly affected, Narconon Fresh Start such as Sunshine Summit Lodge drug rehab centers provide a real and workable route back to freedom from drug and alcohol abuse.

Bath Salts Use Declining

Synthetic CathinonesThe American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has released their most up to date information on Bath Salts (synthetic cathinones) abuse. In it they go over the past several years abuse trends. In 2010, there were a mere 306 cases of bath salts use reported to the AAPCC. 2011 saw the highest number of bath salts abuse with 6,137 reported cases to the AAPCC. The number of cases dramatically dropped by half in 2012 to 2,691 cases of bath salts abuse and in 2013 the AAPCC has seen only 833 cases of bath salts abuse this year. While the year is not over yet, it is safe to say that the number of people abusing this powerful synthetic cathinones will not exceed last years. It appears the word is out about the dangers of this drug and more and more people are steering clear of it.
