What it takes to Truly Recover from Addiction

To truly recover from drug and alcohol addiction the addicted individual has to go beyond just stopping their substance use. It takes major changes in their day to day life, their coping mechanisms, their interpersonal skills and the way they view themselves. Recently, Narconon drug rehab programs were acknowledged for choosing to incorporate both the physical recovery and the cognitive skills education necessary to fully rehabilitate an addicted person.

Since 1966, Narconon programs such as Narconon Fresh Start have been operating based on the need to help the recovering individual develop life skills in addition to ending their physical addiction problem. This concept of working on the addicted person’s cognitive skills during their time in drug rehab is now garnering increasing validation from both national and international health organizations. A recent report noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have released statements acknowledging the necessity to target life skills, e.g. cognitive and social skills during a patient’s time in drug rehab.

The Narconon International website has recently added an area where families can review the importance of life skills in addiction recovery. Narconon Fresh Start incorporates these life skills courses into their programs and understands the importance of educating the recovering individual and their loved ones on constructive ways to handle life’s problems. To achieve lasting sobriety the recovering person needs to repair the damage their addiction has wrought on their lives and the lives of those who care about them. Without repairing one’s past damage, each day will continue to be a struggle.

The Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program addresses the client’s physical cravings through their New Life Detoxification Program. But, if they do not go any further in their rehabilitation process the individual is drug-free but has not developed any solutions to prevent them from returning to their former way of coping. Narconon and Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs know that the recovering person must find relief from their guilt and develop the ability to solve problems without turning to drugs or alcohol. This is where the Narconon life skills training and courses play a pivotal role in the individual’s recovery and lasting sobriety.

The Life Skills Courses that Narconon Fresh Start cover range from developing the ability to effectively communicate with those around them to developing one’s own moral compass that will help guide them in creating an honest life for themselves when they graduate from the program. Because Narconon Fresh Start’s drug rehab centers are long-term, residential treatment programs they provide the recovering individual with the necessary time and drug-free environment to truly focus on their recovery.

Each center is located in specifically chosen settings ideal for their tranquility and serenity. Fort Collins New Life Center is located in Colorado and provides clients with park-like grounds, fresh air and mountain views. Lone Star Victory Ranch in Texas rests in the heart of the majestic Rio Grande Valley and surrounded by lush farmland. Rainbow Canyon Retreat in Nevada was once a dude ranch and sits on 320 acres; it is still an active cattle and horse grazing land. Sunshine Summit Lodge in California was a former executive retreat with a rural location that lends itself to self-discovery and a healthy change of pace for the recovering program participant. With treatment centers located in a variety of different settings Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs will help you or your loved one put an end to addiction once and for all.

I can move forward now

Finally finished with objectives, it feels great. These exercises got me into present time, which was one of the main points of doing them! I needed that to happen in my life so that I could move forward. I realize that anything from the past that has bothered me really doesn’t matter.

Objectives have brought me into present time

Objectives have brought me into present time. I was stuck deeply in the events of the past five years and became an out of control drunk. I am over the past now, and I hope my family understands that I am a different person than I was when I got to Lone Star Victory Ranch. Now, I am in control again and I have regained my confidence. By keeping this mind set I will have a great future in store for me.

Using drugs or alcohol effects more than the user’s body, it dampens their spirit as well. When a person uses drugs they often become “stuck” in past moments of their life, the feelings this brings up often makes them want to use even more. The cycle continues, the more the person uses the more they become stuck in their past and find facing the present and future difficult and overwhelming.

A person who regularly abuses drugs or alcohol losses their ability to focus on goals and objectives in their life, they also have a diminished ability to communicate effectively. An addicted person will have a hard time focusing, communicating with others and problem solving – these issues result in them being unable to achieve their goals in life.

Narconon Fresh Start uses a series of drills and communication exercises to help their program participants develop their ability to confront difficult life situations that they may find themselves in when they complete drug rehab. The first part of the objective exercises teach the client to have a better understanding of what communication really is and allows them to apply it to their present time situations in life. The second part of the objective course focuses on improving an individual’s present time awareness of what is going on around them, increases their ability to remain focused and complete day to day tasks that they start, as well improving upon their communication skills. The focus of many of these objective exercises is on communication. This is because being able to effectively communicate with those around you helps the recovering client to identify problems in life and how to solve them without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Addiction Recovery: Drug Rehab is a Not Always a One Shot Deal

Like many other chronic health issues, drug addiction rehabilitation can take several attempts before finding the right treatment and having lasting success. While some people are able to end their addiction by going “cold turkey” or after their first time to drug rehab, there are many people who need more than one time in treatment to find lasting sobriety. For these individuals, multiple  enrollments in drug rehab is not a sign of weakness or inability to achieve recovery; instead, their need to go through different treatment programs implies that they did not receive enough treatment initially, or, that the program they attended didn’t address all of their issues. This left the client with unresolved underlying issues, making them more susceptible to relapse.

For the majority of addicted people, long-term inpatient drug rehabilitation is needed to put an end to their addiction problems. However, most addicted people choose outpatient or short-term programs because they are more economical and take less time out of their life. While outpatient drug rehab programs and short-term treatment has a place in the field of recovery, they are not ideal solutions for long-term and/or heavily addicted individuals. A person who has been struggling with an addiction problem for some time needs a while to fully withdraw from the substance(s) they are dependent on, time to uncover the underlying issues that drove them to use and time to develop new ways of handling life and daily stress without turning to drugs or alcohol. The process of withdrawal can last several days to over a week and must be completed before the individual is ready to address the personal issues that drove them to use. It takes time for the recovering person to learn, practice and perfect their new life skills; making long-term drug rehab programs an ideal solution.

Narconon Fresh Start has several different long-term residential drug rehab programs to help addicted individuals recover. There is Fort Collins New Life Center in Colorado where clients can receive treatment while being surrounded by picturesque views, nearby parks, rivers and wide open spaces. This Colorado drug rehab is spacious, modern and offers a wide array of recreational activities during the program participant’s free-time.

Lone Star Victory Ranch is another of Narconon Fresh Start’s drug rehab centers located in the heart of the majestic Rio Grande Valley. Situated about thirty miles from the Gulf of Mexico this drug rehab program is surrounded by lush farmland and provides clients with a peaceful sanctuary away from their previous drug using culture.

Located in Nevada, Rainbow Canyon Retreat is an oasis away from client’s previous routines and environment. This program’s main structure is the spacious redwood lodge where program participants gather to dine, relax and share time together. Nestled on 320 beautiful acres, this drug rehab center provides client with plenty of room and lots of healthy ways to spend their free-time when not actively working on their program. Clients enjoy basketball, volleyball, baseball, horse shoes, billiards, ping pong and movies. Home to a professional kitchen, wonderful chefs prepare delicious meals daily for staff and program participants.

If looking for a drug rehab program in California there is none better than Sunshine Summit Lodge. Located near the well-known Warner Hot Springs, this drug rehab is tucked back in the majestic hills of Northern San Diego County. Previously, this facility was an executive retreat but it is now home to one of the most successful drug rehab programs in the country. With a somewhat rural setting, clients are able to focus their energy on their recovery and leave their past behind them. Program participants find the rural setting, wide open spaces, fresh air and panoramic views a welcome change.

As long-term inpatient programs, all of Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab centers are able to help their program participants find lasting sobriety though their non-traditional rehabilitation methods. Using a cognitive behavioral modification method and their New Life Detoxification Program these treatment centers are able to end addiction once and for all. Unlike 12-step treatment methods where clients are told they are suffering with an incurable disease they can only hope to learn to live with, Narconon Fresh Start clients are built up with improved self-esteem and the knowledge that they can take control over their addiction.

Through the course of the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program clients become students learning valuable life skills, integrity and a common sense moral code that when followed will put them on the road to happiness. Students address both the physical emotional aspects of their addiction and resolve the underlying issues that drove them to abuse drugs or alcohol in the first place. Once they have are nearing graduation the student will work closely with their course and case supervisors to develop a battle plan for their future. Their battle plan is a step by step blueprint that contains data that the student has learned on the program to give them the maximum potential for success after completing the program.

The positive results graduates of Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs experience speaks volumes about the programs ability to help even the most severely addicted individuals regain their life back.  Graduates of Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabs no longer refer to themselves as addicts, are not required to attend meetings and are strengthened by the knowledge that that have received during their time in treatment. They have learned so much more than just how to stop using drugs or alcohol; they now have the ability to communicate effectively, to be comfortable with themselves, to control themselves, to be honest, to be responsible for themselves and their actions, to choose friends who will keep them healthy and sober and to confront and overcome problems no matter how difficult without turning to drugs or alcohol as a solution.

Sunshine Summit Lodge Students Speak Up

Today I’m feeling calm and relaxed. My mind is clear, kind, and happy. I’ve learned to stay in the present moment and avoid dwelling on my past misdeeds. There is a lot to be said for facing my personal demons, writing my wrongs and working on moving forward with my life. I’m looking forward to course tomorrow.

Thanks to Sunshine Summit Lodge I’ve been sober one. This is one month of my life that I can remember from start to finish with not blackout and no waking up in an unfamiliar place. I never realized how truly chaotic my life was until I had been here a few weeks. I’ve finally come to understand that the way I was living my life was self-destructive and headed for disaster. What started out as fun had turned into nights on end fuelled by constant drug use and suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Now I know I’ll never have to go through those awful symptoms again thanks to this program. I can put my past behind me and live my life as a drug-free person no longer controlled by the substances I take.

Learning tons about how I can remain healthy, happy and surrounded by other happy and healthy people too!

Today was a great day, what a great realization! I know my last realization while in course was really great and my best one so far. I’m so happy and I can’t wait for the next objective when I go to course tomorrow. I’m curious to see what other great thoughts and realizations I’ll have in the morning.
