Ending Addiction the Drug-Free Way

Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs are entirely drug-free and holistically based. Clients who enter treatment with severe physical addiction issues and require medication during their withdrawal process are taken to medical detox until their withdrawal symptoms have subsided. Once they return to the drug rehab center they will begin Narconon Fresh Start’s drug-free withdrawal program.

This group of drug rehab facilities does not use any form of drug replacement or drug substitution therapy to help their clients end their addiction. It is their belief that helping a person get off drugs only to still remain dependent on a prescription drug is not true rehabilitation. Clients in the Narconon Fresh Start program truly end their dependence on all substances during their time in treatment. They graduate from the program no longer controlled by any addictive substances and in charge of their thoughts, actions and future. They do not attend meetings and no longer think of themselves as addicts because they have fully recovered from their addiction. Having learned all the necessary life skills, intrapersonal skills and relapse prevention techniques and tips they have all they need within themselves to maintain their sobriety.

Accomplishing Lasting Sobriety

Drug and alcohol addiction doesn’t have to control your life any longer. It may sound impossible, but you can have a life completely free from substance use of any kind. The new life you create for yourself can be filled with wonderful, healthy highs and a sense of purpose you probably don’t feel at this moment. I can imagine that if you are struggling with an addiction problem right now your sole purpose is to get the drugs you feel you need. After that, the only drive you probably feel is to use them in an attempt to feel the “high” you keep chasing and so desperately want to feel. You may even be struggling with achieving the feeling you are looking for because your drug use has escalated and you tolerance has increased. It may be nearly impossible for you to find pleasure in the little things in life (a shooting star, a beautiful rainbow after the storm, etc.) any longer because they seem so unimportant and meaningless.

I know how you feel; I’ve been there myself. While I have over a decade of sobriety under my belt I still vividly remember the feelings, thoughts and emotions that I struggled with during the darkest days of my addiction to cocaine and a laundry list of other substances. I had become a shell of my former self and was so completely unhappy with my life that I didn’t respect myself physically or emotionally. I put myself in very dangerous situations, sometimes intentionally with no care as to whether I would walk away from the experience. My days were spent sleeping and recovering from the previous night. My nights were filled with chaos and fuelled by constant drug use; everything from marijuana, ecstasy, acid, pills to cocaine (my drug of choice).

When I finally took a long hard look at myself and the life I was living I realized that I was so miserable. I wanted out of it all. I tried several times to stop on my own but… one thing led to another and there I was doing another line like I promised myself I wouldn’t. It was disappointing and made me feel ashamed of my lack of willpower. As a side note, I later learned that it wasn’t a lack of willpower that kept me from staying sober. It was the changes in my brain from continual drug use that sent non-stop messages and urges to use; these messages from my brain told my body that it didn’t feel “normal” unless it had a substance in it.  I also realize now that I hadn’t developed any healthy ways to handle stress or day to day problems that arose. My answer for everything was to get high and escape.

I tried outpatient treatment but only managed to gain some new drug using friends and new techniques on how to get high out of the experience. I was still using and hadn’t accomplished my goal of ending my drug addiction problem. I reached out to my parents and they did some research on the internet. With their help I was put in touch with an amazing counselor at one of the Narconon Fresh Start programs. She was the voice on the other end of the phone that knew what I was going through. She understood my trepidation and made me feel like if put my trust in the program and applied myself I could get off cocaine and everything else. I headed out the next morning with my parents and made the drive over to California.

When I arrived I received a warm welcome and was taken on a brief tour of the facility with my parents. Withdrawal was difficult to say the least, but luckily for me cocaine isn’t physically addictive. I had completed the withdrawal process in a few days and was ready to begin the program. The changes I saw in myself were great but the changes my parents and friends heard in my voice and saw in the pictures I sent were even more amazing. The New Life Detoxification Program was able to help me flush out the remaining drug toxins from my years of substance abuse and put an end to my cravings. The drills and learning exercises I took part in made me come to realize my shortcomings so that when I graduated I wouldn’t be vulnerable to peer-pressure any longer. I found my voice and learned everyday skills that I somehow had never known. Being part of a group and doing things to better the greater good of the group and community gave me a sense of pride and purpose I’d never felt before. The experience changed my life in more ways that just getting off drugs; it helped me become an adult.

Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs are located in various settings, chosen for their scenic beauty and ability to provide people in recovery an ideal sanctuary from the temptations and restimulative environments that they have previously known. The philosophy of all Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab centers is that drug and alcohol addiction is not a disease and that a person is not powerless over their substance use. Their treatment philosophy is to treat drug and alcohol addiction for what it really is; a physical and mental problem that must be overcome with underlying issues that need to be addressed and resolved. Using holistic treatment methods, clients achieve lasting sobriety without the aid of replacement drugs or prescription medications. If you think about it, using replacement drugs or prescriptions to help a person recover only draws out their recovery process and causes them to be controlled by yet another substance. Instead of that approach to drug rehabilitation, Narconon Fresh Start utilizes their New Life Detoxification Method (a body cleansing and purification process) combined with Cognitive Behavioral Modification (addressing dysfunctional emotions, maladaptive behaviors and cognitive processes and contents through a number of goal-oriented, distinct systematic procedures) to achieve a very high success rate of true rehabilitation.

Narconon Fresh Start programs are designed to address each client’s addiction problem in its entirely. A graduate from any Narconon Fresh Start program has fully recovered from their drug and alcohol addiction and now has the tools and life skills to face the world head on meeting each challenge without turning to substance use as an escape. Their programs have over 45 years of successful graduates who continue to live healthy, happy and drug-free lives after completing treatment, I know because I’m one of them!

Narconon Fresh Start’s Drug Rehabilitation Philosophy

Unlike other drug rehab programs who have their clients believing they suffer from the disease of addiction, Narconon Fresh Start programs know that addiction to illicit drugs, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications (OTC) and alcohol is not a lifelong sentence and is not an incurable disease. Twelve-step based programs tell their clients that they are powerless and label them an addict or alcoholic insisting that they can only hope to manage their addiction problem by taking it one day at a time. We believe that this is not the case and have over 45 years of successful, fully rehabilitated clients who live a life of sobriety and do not think of themselves as addicts any longer. Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabs treat addiction to drugs and alcohol for what it truly is, a physical and mental problem that needs to overcome while addressing the underlying issues that drove the person to use in the first place. The program we use builds up our client’s self-esteem, self-confidence and ability to handle life as a sober individual. While going through the Narconon Fresh Start Program clients become more like students learning invaluable interpersonal skills such as effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, listening skills, problem solving, decision making, assertiveness as well as the ability to work well with others and as part of a team. About Drug Rehab

When drugs and/or alcohol take over a person’s life to the point where they are suffering physical, emotional or financial hardships yet they continue to use despite these negative consequences they have an addiction problem. Addiction treatment is necessary when the individual has attempted to end their substance use on their own with little to no real success. Entering a drug rehab program will help the individual get help to control their drug taking behavior and learn to live a sober, happy and successful life. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups (AA/NA), counseling (individual/group) and drug rehabilitation programs (inpatient/outpatient). Each of these differs in their approach to treating addiction problems, the programs level of intensity and duration of time.

• Self-help groups such as AA or NA typically approach drug addiction as a disease one has to accept and learn to live with one day at a time. They are a place where ex-drug users and current drug users looking to end their addiction problem gather together in hopes of helping one another. While they may have a leader to provide some direction to the meeting, there is usually no treatment professional present. A number of people find these types of meetings re-stimulating because those attending are bringing up past drug using stories and reliving their experiences.
• Counseling, whether individual or group can be a beneficial way of working through many drug addiction issues. While individual or private counseling sessions are going to provide the most one-on-one care, many people choose group counseling because it is more cost effective. It is not unusual for a person to enter a group counseling session and feel overwhelmed by the others present and choose not to share anything about themself. While just sitting in the room and listening to others as well as the counselor can have its benefits, it is not going to yield the best long-term outcome of lasting sobriety and learning valuable interpersonal skills.
• Drug rehab programs provide the addicted person with the environment and education they need to stop using drugs or alcohol. Outpatient programs are much less intensive than inpatient ones but do offer some structure for the recovering individual. They are expected to attend on specific days and times giving them a sense of purpose and accountability. When compared to self-help groups this is a step up in intensity because there is no mandate that the addicted person attend meetings (unless ordered to by the justice system) and no one will follow up with them whether they went to their meeting or not. Inpatient programs are the most intensive level of addiction treatment and provide their clients with the greatest chance of achieving lasting sobriety. While it can seem daunting to enroll in a program that lasts close to a month or longer, doing so can mean the difference between breaking the cycle of addiction and experiencing another relapse. Inpatient programs operate in a variety of different environments and for various lengths of time.

I’ve used all different kinds of drugs…

Since I was 16 I’ve abused all different kinds of drugs. I finally hit rock bottom and realized I need help. Sitting in withdrawal I learned a lot about myself in a short amount of time. I’m very grateful for this opportunity I’ve been given to have a second chance at living a sober love. I intend on taking full advantage of it!
