Changed my life entirely

The New Life detoxification program has changed my life entirely. My body and mind feel infinitely clearer. I have more energy than ever and I am excited to move forward with my program.

Narconon Fresh Start uses the New Life Detoxification Program to help their clients physically purify and detoxify their bodies from the inside out. The process removes the drug residuals and toxins from the cells of the body, eliminating future drug cravings and urges. The entire New Life Detoxification Program takes several weeks to complete but is so effective that many clients experience benefits within just the first few days or week of starting the process. Once this portion of the Narconon Fresh Start program is complete the program participant is ready to focus on finding and confronting the sources of his or her problems during the remainder of their time in treatment.

What is drug addiction?

Not everyone who experiments with drugs will develop an addiction problem, but many people do. Drug addiction can be defined as the compulsive seeking and use of a substance regardless of the negative consequences the continued use brings to the individual. A person with an addiction problem will put all their other needs on hold so that they can support their habit. This may mean not paying rent, not going to work or even not buying food to feed their family and themselves. This lack of self-preservation is a key indicator of an addiction problem.

Previously, it was thought that a person with an addiction to drugs or alcohol needed to use the substance daily. It was believed that only individuals who experienced physical withdrawal symptoms when they stopped taking the substance were addicted. There were also those who thought that addiction is something that only happens to the poor, unemployed or people from the inner city. These major misconceptions have been dispelled and are now thought of as archaic beliefs about addiction. Today, there are drug addicts who do not use on a daily basis, do not experience physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop using and live in the suburbs or rural areas of the country. There is even a category of addicted individuals known as functioning addicts who are able to maintain their jobs and appear to be functioning normally to those around them who don’t know their dark secret.

Sadly, without help most drug addicted persons sink deeper and deeper into their substance use. Some will switch from one drug to another looking for that feeling they used to get when they first started using. It is not uncommon for an addicted person to even take multiple substances at the same time to increase their high and achieve the effect they are so desperate to feel. When a person starts to take more of a drug, switch substances without understanding what they are taking or mix drugs (street drugs, prescription medications, over the counter drugs and/or alcohol) they are setting themselves up for an increased chance of an overdose. Many people are unaware of the dangerous interactions that different substances have on their body and unwittingly consume lethal combinations without meaning to. Sometimes these individuals are able to be saved, but many suffer from deadly drug overdoses. As recently as 2010 there were over 38,000 drug induced deaths here in the United States (Journal of the American Medical Association). The majority of these deaths were caused by pharmaceuticals (57.7%). Of the 22,134 individuals who died due to pharmaceuticals in 2010, 75.2% of these individuals died due to taking prescription Opioids.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Explained

Drug and alcohol addiction can be explained by examining the root causes for a person’s addiction issues. Many times, a person will develop an addiction problem over a period of time because they are attempting to avoid facing some issues in their life, attempting to numb a particular discomfort (this can be physical or psychological), looking to escape from their feelings (boredom, depression, unhappiness, hopelessness, etc.). These individuals choose to use drugs or alcohol because they feel that they are unable to handle or fix the issues on their own and have not developed the interpersonal skills to handle these difficult situations.

When a person first experiences the feeling of being on a drug or drinking alcohol and they enjoy how they feel they will do their best to recreate those feelings over and over again. To them, the substance seems to have solved their issue because they now feel better and seem able to handle life. This is when the substances they are abusing become more and more valuable to them because they appear to be an effective way to feel better. Unfortunately for the user, drugs and alcohol only give the illusion of solving their problems. While the painkilling effect or the numbing sensation that the person experiences is an easy and nearly instantaneous solution for their pain and discomfort, it will quickly spiral out of control causing added problems to their life. When the individual continually chooses drugs and alcohol to handle their problems and issues it is only a matter of time before they become physically addicted, emotionally addicted or both physically and emotionally dependent on the substance.

As they continue to descend into their addiction they find that it takes more and more of the substance to numb them, get them high or just to feel normal and be able to function at all. It is not uncommon for addicts to suffer from severe guilt and symptoms of depression because of their substance use which in turn makes them feel the urge to use more drugs or drink more to cover those feelings as well. Eventually, the addicted individual will begin to sacrifice their personal integrity, their relationships with their loved ones, their finances and anything else they have so that they can support their habit. The characteristics of a person struggling with addiction issues include:

  • Dishonesty
  • Isolates self
  • Lies to family, friends, employers
  • May appear chronically depressed
  • May begin stealing from family and friends
  • Mood swings
  • Unable to finish projects
  • Unexpressed resentment and secret hatreds
  • Unreliable
  • Withdraws from those who love them

A person who is struggling with an addiction problem may be able to stop on their own depending on the severity of their issues and the substance they are dependent on. Often, before an individual chooses to enter treatment they have numerous failed attempts at sobriety on their own. Some people have attended multiple rehab programs and not found lasting sobriety. Narconon Fresh Start is a network of highly successful drug-free rehab programs with a very high success rate and a written guarantee for their graduates. The Narconon Fresh Start programs are not just another run-of-the-mill rehab that believes addiction is a lifelong disease and churns out individuals who are not fully rehabilitated and need additional support and care. Graduates of Narconon Fresh Start leave as fully recovered individuals who do not need to attend meetings or take supplemental drugs to maintain their sobriety. A person who completes the Narconon Fresh Start program is able to stand on their own two feet and handle life straight on because they have all the interpersonal life skills and techniques they need to take care of any and all issues that arise. They are addressed their addiction problem as well as the underlying issues that drove them to choose drugs or alcohol as a solution.

If for any reason during the first six months after graduation from the program the recovered individual feels that additional help is needed to maintain their sobriety they are welcome to return free of charge for an advanced treatment review program. This free advanced treatment review program does not include the price of airfare or the price of a medical detox, which is the responsibility of the review program participant. Medical detox is not always necessary, but may be required in the rare case that the client has been using the amount or type of drugs or alcohol that may require a medical detox before beginning the advanced treatment review process. Having such a guarantee of service and recovery is unheard of in the field of drug and alcohol addiction recovery. Narconon Fresh Start is so sure of their ability to help you or your loved one that they stand behind their decades of successful results.

Looking on the bright side

After completing sauna I feel amazing! I feel that I can finally understand what the expression “look on the bright side” means because now my outlook on life has changed. Before I didn’t care about what I put into my body or how I treated myself. Through being here and learning how to take care of myself and how important good nutrition, exercise and healthy living is to maintain my sobriety there is no way that I’m going back to the way I used to live. I’ve invested so much already in getting this far in my program and achieving sobriety that I don’t want to jeopardize it. I’m going to keep up exercising and eating right so that I don’t fall back into bad habits.

This program has taught me so much more than I ever thought it would. I anticipated learning how to get off drugs but the education that I’m getting while I’m here is helping me in every area of my life! My family tells me when they talk to me they can actually hear my improvement in my voice and the topics I’m discussing with them. I can now make plans for my future when I return home instead of living day to day and no knowing what’s around the corner. Even though my addiction hurt me and those I love, by looking on the bright side I’m able to see that it brought me to Narconon Fresh Start and the new life that I’m excited to have when I graduate and go back home no longer an addict but as a fully recovered person = )

Going through drug free withdrawal

Physically addictive drugs such as heroin and alcohol are often accompanied by significant amounts of physical pain and discomfort when the recovering individual stops taking them. This is why Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs conducts a pre-medical evaluation and ensures safe around the clock care resulting in our client’s drug free withdrawal being relatively pain free. Severe physical addiction cases require medically supervised detox outside of our facilities to make certain the client’s physical comfort and safety are maintained. When the client has concluded medical detox they then return to the Narconon Fresh Start facility they are scheduled to attend and continue with their drug free withdrawal process at our treatment location. Every program participant who enrolls in the Narconon Fresh Start program is watched and monitored closely by our detox specialists to make certain their drug free withdrawal is as pain-free and comfortable in addition to ensuring that all their emotional needs are taken care of.

“After being addicted to heroin for years the idea of going through a drug free withdrawal was excruciating. The detox staff and counselors at the center aggressed that I needed some time in medical detox to help with my withdrawal symptoms before starting Narconon Fresh Start’s drug free withdrawal. When the time came to enter the Narconon program itself and begin my drug free withdrawal I was still nervous but felt ready to attempt the challenge. Getting through the first few days was the hardest for sure. Thank God that I had their detox crew there to help when times got rough and I was feeling horrible. The therapeutic techniques they used actually made a difference and helped me out during some of my darkest hours. Now that I’m on the other side of my heroin withdrawal I’m so grateful. I can’t wait to start the New Life Detoxification sauna program that I’ve been hearing so much about. A chance to flush out all the drug toxins still left behind in my body is a welcomed opportunity. –D.W.”
