How does Narconon Fresh Start Work?

Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs begin with a drug-free withdrawal; this is because our programs are entirely drug-free and holistically based. Graduates of our programs do not take any form of drug therapy or drug substitution treatment during their rehabilitation process. Once they complete the Narconon Fresh Start program they are able to stand on their own two feet and meet challenges head on without using any substances to maintain their sobriety. During the program participants drug-free withdrawal they are provided with specific supplementary vitamins and minerals to minimize the physical problems associated with the initial stopping of drug use. Additionally, special and quite unique procedures developed by L. Ron Hubbard, called “assists,” are used to further ease the discomfort of withdrawal.

Additionally, graduates of our programs no longer consider themselves addicts. They have fully recovered from their addiction and do not attend meetings or counseling to maintain their sobriety. During their time at Narconon Fresh Start they will have learned, practiced and mastered all the necessary life skills and relapse prevention techniques.

The program participant then undergoes a total body detoxification regimen known as the New Life Detoxification Program. Our detox program is unique in the drug rehabilitation field and has been created as being the basis to the Narconon Fresh Start programs success rate of lasting sobriety. The detoxification program consists of an intensive sauna and exercise program, carried out in conjunction with carefully administered vitamin and mineral supplementation. Also developed by Mr. Hubbard, the New Life Detoxification program enables the body to rid itself of drug metabolite residues lodged in fatty tissues. This is crucial because the release of such substances back into the bloodstream when a person becomes anxious, excited or physically active, even years later, causes the recovered individual to again feel cravings to take drugs.

A part of the Narconon Fresh Start program addresses the program participants emotional and behavioral issues brought on by their substance abuse.  Commonly, heavy drug abusers will lie, steal, and degrade themselves in order to procure additional drugs or simply because the impact of the drugs on them emotionally serves to make them unfeeling and uncaring of others. The Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabilitation program addresses this and the fact that, to a greater or lesser degree, the addict resorted to drugs due to an inability to successfully handle situations in their life. That the drugs then became their own reason for further drug use does not change the fact that the detoxified addict still has a need to learn life skills.

For these reason the Narconon Fresh Start program includes a series of courses and practical exercises utilizing technologies developed by L. Ron Hubbard. These provide the program participant with tools and abilities needed to deal successfully with life situations and interact positively and responsibly with loved ones, associates and in the community as a whole.

As the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabilitation program fully addresses the multiple ways in which drugs and/or alcohol impacts the individual – graduates of the program find that they are released from the chains of addiction. No longer trapped with bodies that physically repeat the demand for further drugs, and no longer needing a refuge from aspects of life that seem “too difficult” or “too unfair” to deal with. Narconon Fresh Start graduates become truly free and able to contribute to their communities and to set out to create the life they desire.

Choosing a Drug Rehab for Your Loved One

The process of choosing a drug rehab program for your loved one is often difficult. Typically, everyone involved feels as though they are in crisis mode and that decisions must be made quickly. Frequently, parents and care takers of drug or alcohol dependent persons are not knowledgeable about drug rehab programs e.g. the different methods of rehabilitation used, the length of treatment, follow up care, drug-free vs. medically assisted, etc. Understanding what type of treatment options are out there will make a significant difference in whether the program your loved one attends is going to be the right fit, length and intensity for their recovery needs. When substance abuse has become an integral aspect of your loved one’s life, time is essential, and you must quickly educate yourself about drug rehabilitation programs. The fastest way to do this is to read the information the facilities provide, and then know what questions to ask when you contact these facilities.

Questions to ask when speaking with various drug rehab programs include:

Is the facility accredited?

This is not a requirement for rehabilitation facilities, but it is a good sign that your loved one will receive excellent care. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations are independent organizations, which are not affiliated with any rehab facility, and which serve as intermediaries for quality control. A facility that is accredited has made quality care and service a priority.

Does the facility specialize in drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation?

These programs provide a complete environment for recovery; everything from the physical set-up of the buildings and grounds, to specialized training of the staff members working in the field of substance abuse rehabilitation. They not only understand the process of withdrawal and recovery, but are also trained in physical needs, such as nutrition, skin care, hygiene, eating problems, and sleeping habits. The psychologists are specifically trained in the treatment of addicts and addictive personalities, and thoroughly understand the challenges facing a patient with an innate addictive personality trait.

Does the drug rehab provide a variety of programs and care?

Addiction is a problem that progresses with predictable stages and their accompanying needs. As the patient moves through the stages of recovery, the facility must be able to offer a variety of different treatments to meet these individual needs. The staff at the facility should be able to make an informed decision as the program participant progresses through their program about the appropriate treatment. These decisions are based on observation, input from the program participant and family, interaction with other patients, and indications of the ability to return to the outside world while maintaining sobriety.

Has the facility demonstrated success in the specific treatment of substance abuse?

This is where research is imperative, because the facility itself will always sing its own praises. When a facility tells you they have an 80% success rate, ask them how they came to that figure, and then ask to see their research. If at all possible, speak to some of the other families whose loved one’s have gone through the program. Get as much information as possible, which includes touring the facility and observing the program participants and staff in a typical setting.

Are there adequate medical personnel accessible in case of illness, accidents, or complications?

All inpatient facilities should have on-staff medical emergency care. The facility should have an arrangement with a nearby acute care hospital in case a patient must be transferred. The facility should have a staff of multiple persons trained in various specialties who are available for consultation and medical attention.

To what degree is the family involved in the treatment plan in the facility?

Drug abuse and alcoholism have a profound effect on the entire family. Sometimes, the interactions of family members may figure strongly in the substance abuse problem of the patient in the rehab facility. Family involvement is an important part of the recovery process. Find out to what extent family members are involved and in what capacity. Ask if there is a family therapy program, and if information is available for the family when the patient returns home.

What is the success rate of patients maintaining sobriety once they return home?

The goal of the best rehab programs is to return the patient to their home with the ability to function independently in their lives. Find out what their discharge plan is and how much the family is involved in this planning. It is also important to find out what role the facility has and what action it will take if it is discovered that your loved one has had a relapse after being discharged.

How much does a drug rehab facility cost?

Even though your loved one is in crisis, there are always financial limitations within a family. The fee is often broken down in different formats, so ask what services are included and which will be added as additional fee-for-service programs. Then find out which services your health insurance carrier will cover. Once you have this information, meet with the staff at the facility, particularly any personnel who will be handling your loved one’s case exclusively, and find out which programs they believe are mandatory. Keep in mind that the success of a rehab program depends of the quality and thoroughness of its treatment.

Does the facility offer follow–up and continuing care after your loved one has returned home?

Substance abuse is a long-term problem, and recovery is a continuing process. The skills learned in the rehab facility must be transferred into everyday life. Find out if the facility offers a follow-up program, and if that program is close to where the family resides. This program should provide a professional in the field of substance abuse who will monitor and support your loved one’s recovery.

What it takes to Truly Recover from Addiction

To truly recover from drug and alcohol addiction the addicted individual has to go beyond just stopping their substance use. It takes major changes in their day to day life, their coping mechanisms, their interpersonal skills and the way they view themselves. Recently, Narconon drug rehab programs were acknowledged for choosing to incorporate both the physical recovery and the cognitive skills education necessary to fully rehabilitate an addicted person.

Since 1966, Narconon programs such as Narconon Fresh Start have been operating based on the need to help the recovering individual develop life skills in addition to ending their physical addiction problem. This concept of working on the addicted person’s cognitive skills during their time in drug rehab is now garnering increasing validation from both national and international health organizations. A recent report noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have released statements acknowledging the necessity to target life skills, e.g. cognitive and social skills during a patient’s time in drug rehab.

The Narconon International website has recently added an area where families can review the importance of life skills in addiction recovery. Narconon Fresh Start incorporates these life skills courses into their programs and understands the importance of educating the recovering individual and their loved ones on constructive ways to handle life’s problems. To achieve lasting sobriety the recovering person needs to repair the damage their addiction has wrought on their lives and the lives of those who care about them. Without repairing one’s past damage, each day will continue to be a struggle.

The Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program addresses the client’s physical cravings through their New Life Detoxification Program. But, if they do not go any further in their rehabilitation process the individual is drug-free but has not developed any solutions to prevent them from returning to their former way of coping. Narconon and Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs know that the recovering person must find relief from their guilt and develop the ability to solve problems without turning to drugs or alcohol. This is where the Narconon life skills training and courses play a pivotal role in the individual’s recovery and lasting sobriety.

The Life Skills Courses that Narconon Fresh Start cover range from developing the ability to effectively communicate with those around them to developing one’s own moral compass that will help guide them in creating an honest life for themselves when they graduate from the program. Because Narconon Fresh Start’s drug rehab centers are long-term, residential treatment programs they provide the recovering individual with the necessary time and drug-free environment to truly focus on their recovery.

Each center is located in specifically chosen settings ideal for their tranquility and serenity. Fort Collins New Life Center is located in Colorado and provides clients with park-like grounds, fresh air and mountain views. Lone Star Victory Ranch in Texas rests in the heart of the majestic Rio Grande Valley and surrounded by lush farmland. Rainbow Canyon Retreat in Nevada was once a dude ranch and sits on 320 acres; it is still an active cattle and horse grazing land. Sunshine Summit Lodge in California was a former executive retreat with a rural location that lends itself to self-discovery and a healthy change of pace for the recovering program participant. With treatment centers located in a variety of different settings Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs will help you or your loved one put an end to addiction once and for all.

This program was a success

Before coming to Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab I was angry at myself and a drug addict. Today, I am drug free and have the technology to stay off drugs. I’ve learned how to talk to others in a way that gets my point across, how to be a good listener when other people are talking, I’ve learned to stay in the present moment, what to look for in people who wish me well vs. doing me harm, to take responsibility for myself, how to change my current condition if I don’t like the way I feel or what is going on in my life, a moral code to live by and I’ve created a battle plan for my future. With all of this rehabilitation technology I know that I have everything I need to stay sober when I graduate and return home. This program was a success for me.

Addiction is NOT a Character Flaw

While a great deal of people still believe that becoming an addict is a choice, a sign of weak morals or a character flaw – it is not. Developing an addiction to drugs or alcohol is an unintentional process that happens over time, very gradually. The individual initially starts out choosing to abuse the drugs for whatever reason: boredom, stress, relationship issues, problems at work or school, etc. but overtime they begin to rely on the substance more and more.

Every substance: alcohol, marijuana, heroin, prescription pills… changes the way the user’s brain functions in its own way. While each substance acts differently on the user, they all create similar effects in the user’s brain. These effects range from changes in the molecules and cells that make up the brain to mood and memory processes to the user’s motor skills such as walking and talking. In time, the substance becomes the single most important aspect of the user’s life. Their brain is now wired to continue substance use at all costs to ensure that it feels “normal”.

Sunshine Summit Lodge in Southern California has been helping addicted individuals get off drugs and alcohol for many years. Their program has a long history of success and is rooted in one of the most effective treatment models for achieving true and lasting recovery. Based on the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program, Sunshine Summit Lodge has a very high success rate at real addiction rehabilitation. As a long-term residential drug rehab program, they provide their clients with all the amenities necessary to completely withdraw, detox and rehabilitate at the treatment center.

Graduates of Sunshine Summit Lodge do not have any follow-up meetings to attend, no “homework” to work on when they return home. They have applied themselves during their time in treatment and have learned all the necessary life skills and lessons to maintain their sobriety on their own. Additionally, Narconon Fresh Start programs are entirely drug-free and holistically based. This means that when a client completes their time in treatment they do not take any prescription medications or drug replacement therapy to maintain their sobriety. They are free of all addictions and no longer controlled by any outside substances.
