FAQ About Narconon Fresh Start

  • What does the word “Narconon” mean?
    • The word Narconon comes from two Greek words. The first being “Narco” meaning drugs and the second from “Non” meaning no. When combined they make the word Narconon = “Drugs-No!”
  • What is Narconon Fresh Start’s philosophy on addiction?
    • At Narconon Fresh Start we believe that the addicted person can accomplish complete rehabilitation and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction through the application of our Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program.  Unlike 12 step programs, we do not tell our clients that they are powerless over their addiction. Instead, we treat addiction for what it really is; a physical and mental problem that has to be overcome with underlying issues that must be resolved. We have successfully proven this for over 45 with an extremely high percentage of our graduates going on to live a life of sobriety.
  • How did the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program begin?
    • The Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program was founded by Mr. William Benitez in the Arizona State Penitentiary back in 1966. At that time, Mr. Benitez was a heroin addict who was struggling to kick the habit using traditional methods. Using the techniques of researcher and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, Mr. Benitez was finally able to break his heroin addiction problem once and for all. He went on to help other inmates get off drugs.  This is the beginning of the Narconon Fresh Start program we now see today. Currently, the Narconon network of drug rehabs have over 50 drug rehabilitation centers around the world.
  • What does it mean to be a “non-traditional” drug rehab?
    • While most other drug rehab centers use a combination of 12 step recovery and group therapy, we do not use either of these typical rehab techniques. Our drug rehab programs are not based on the disease model of addiction which dictates that a person with an addiction problem will always be an addict with an incurable disease. We approach addiction by confronting and locating the specific causes of addiction and the many behaviors associated with it and resolving them. While our clients enter our drug rehab facilities as addicts, they become students learning life skills throughout their program. When they graduate from the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program they are no longer “addicts”, they have fully recovered from their addiction issues. Throughout our program we do not utilize any drug substitution medications or replacement drugs ensuring that our graduating clients are no longer controlled by any substances whatsoever.
  • What makes the Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab program so exceptional?
    • Our high success rate is a result of the very structured, step-by-step sequence of program components. We approach physical detoxification in a way that no other drug rehab program comes close to. The long-term use of addictive substances causes a buildup of drug toxins and metabolites in the user’s body. If left behind, these drug or alcohol toxins will remain in the recovering person’s body for years to come causing the person cravings to use and inspiring relapse. Using the New Life Detoxification Program, Narconon Fresh Start drug rehabs effectively flush out the remaining drug toxins and metabolites. The detox program consists of program participants taking in specific nutritional supplements proven to aid in the flushing out of drug toxins from their fatty tissue, participating in supervised exercise and time sweating in the dry sauna.

Program participants are taught life skills during their time Narconon Fresh Start. Because many people mistakenly believe that the common abilities (getting along with others, confronting situations, handling stress) and life skills (communication, learning, discovering social and anti-social personalities, etc.) a person uses everyday are instinctual they never take the time to learn, practice and perfect them. Life skills are an area most addicted persons struggle with and are often found to be deficient in. Just a few of the life skills the recovering individual is taught while at Narconon Fresh Start include effective communication skills, how to confront situations in a drug-free way, how to be accountable for one’s actions and how to change one’s perception of themself.

In addition to the life skills courses the program participant takes part in a number of therapeutic procedures completely unique to the Narconon Fresh Start program. These one of a kind therapeutic procedures are designed to free the individual from their guilt, remorse and regret of past actions while restoring their self-control that was sacrificed when they become addicted to drugs or alcohol.

The Cycle of Addiction

To understand the cycle of addiction you need to know that mind-altering drugs are essentially painkillers. A person who chooses to take drugs and develops an addiction problem has some underlying unhappiness, sense of hopelessness or physical pain that drives them to choose substance use as a solution to their problems. When an individual experiences unhappiness, hopelessness, boredom or physical discomfort they may choose to try drugs or alcohol as an escape from what they are going through. At first, the alcohol or drugs appears to solve their problem. They feel better and now they seem better able to deal with their problem; this is when the substance becomes valuable to them.

As the individual gradually increases how much of the substance they use they become trapped. Whatever their initial problem, it is now overshadowed by their drug or alcohol abuse. It is at this point that all they can think about is getting and using the substance that is going to make them “feel” better. As their addiction develops the person loses their ability to control how much they use and the negative consequences of their behavior.

The addicted person begins to hide their substance use from those around them. Doing so causes the person to feel dishonest and guilty, which leads them to become withdrawn and difficult to reason with. Their behavior often appears “strange” to those around them. The more the person uses, the more guilty and depressed they become. Typically, the addicted person will sacrifice their personal integrity by lying and stealing to maintain their habit. Their relationships with friends, family, employers and co-workers will deteriorate.

To the addicted person, their drug of choice is now the most important thing in their life. They will throw away their job, finances, dreams and ambitions in order to maintain their substance use. The irony is that the addicted person is chasing an elusive high that their body is likely unable to achieve any longer. As they take more and more of their drug of choice just to be able to “function” they are increasing their tolerance to the drug’s effects.

The user’s body begins to adapt the presence of the substance and expects that it will regularly be ingested. The addicted individual begins to experience drug cravings when they are unable to take the substance and suffers from an overwhelming obsession with getting and using the drug; they will do anything to make the bad feelings of withdrawal end. The person’s addiction progresses deeper and deeper causing them to become increasingly haggard and ill-tempered. Their emotions go up and down so quickly that they may even be mistaken for symptoms of mental illness if not properly diagnosed.

The individual is stuck in the downward spiral of addiction and faces the potential problem of having no job, no money, no friends or family to help them. The individual is trapped by their addiction; the substances they once used to escape have changed them physically and mentally and now control their thoughts and actions.

Narconon Fresh Start and its network of drug rehab facilities: Fort Collins New Life Center, Lone Star Victory Ranch, Rainbow Canyon Retreat and Sunshine Summit Lodge. Every year these drug rehabs are helping addicted persons make real recoveries from their addiction problems and teaching them how to live a life free of drugs and alcohol. Graduates of these drug rehab programs do not take drug replacement medications or drug substation therapy, they do not think of themselves as suffering from a disease and they are not made to feel powerless over their addiction problem. Instead, they are built up to feel powerful over their future and their ability to end their addiction issues. Narconon Fresh Start knows that addiction to drugs and alcohol is NOT a disease and can be ended once and for all. The program is centered on their New Life Detoxification Program and Cognitive Behavioral Modification Model of drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Treating addiction for what it truly is, not a disease but a physical and mental issues that must be overcome along with underlying problems (depression, stress management, shyness, personal relationships, etc.) that need to simultaneously be resolved is the difference between Narconon Fresh Start and other rehab centers. With over 45 years of fully rehabilitated graduates and a high success rate at real and lasting sobriety, Narconon Fresh Start is changing the way people view addiction and the recovery process. Their thousands of graduates over the years are living proof that their programs have the ability to help every level of dependence and every type of substance use.

“Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab helped me return to my real self, free of drugs and alcohol. It was a great program and did so much more for me than just help me get off drugs. I was able to finally address the things in my past that drove me to use. Going through those difficult emotions was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but I’m glad I did it. They no longer haunt me and drag me back into the past. I am living for today and my future. I feel like the person I was before I started abusing alcohol and drugs. My mind and my body are now clear. I have acquired new tools that will keep me be drug free and happy. I recommend the program to those looking for a common sense approach to rehabilitation.”

“The cycle of addiction drove me into some of the darkest days of my life. I was doing things I wasn’t proud of and lying to the people I loved on a daily basis. Each day was a challenge. If I couldn’t get ahold of what I felt I needed it would seem like the walls were caving in on me. After completing the Narconon Fresh Start program I’m me again, minus the heroin and other opiates. Their drug rehab program changed how I viewed my life and how I interacted with the world around me. I learned to take responsibility for myself and my choices. I worked on my self-confidence and ability to confront difficult situations. I now have new tools and life skills when things get rough instead of turning to drugs to escape. I’m eternally grateful that I’m not an addict, I don’t have a disease and I don’t have to go to meetings for the rest of my life. Narconon Fresh Start made the difference in my life that no other drug rehab was able to achieve.”

The sauna

The sauna part of the program helped me a lot more than I thought it would. I feel like I have never put a drug in my body.

The cornerstone of the Narconon Fresh Start program is the New Life Detoxification program. This detoxification process removes the root cause of future drug and alcohol re-stimulation by flushing out the accumulated toxic metabolites in the fatty tissues. The process consists of medically supervised exercise, combined with dry sauna therapy and scientifically formulated nutritional supplements targeted to rid the fatty tissues of the stored drug metabolites, eliminating the physical cause of cravings and relapse. Within just a few days to a week, program participants have color back in their face, their eyes are brighter, their energy level increases and they are sleeping well at night and waking feeling refreshed the next morning. Their mood swings from anger to depression and general uncomfortability and anxiety levels diminish as they begin to feel centered and balanced, more like themselves.

My biggest win…

I feel like I opened my mind to the possibilities of learning new things that I would previously have been closed to. Graduating sauna was a pretty major win. My biggest win however, was defiantly seeing the marked improvement in my personality and IQ scores…

Specifically for me it is very difficult to stop my mind from going over and over things, making me more and more upset and costing me a lot of sleep. This will undoubtedly help me to control these rampant thoughts and stay in present time. I also built much more rapport with matt and a much deeper understanding of how he is going you help me through this program. I felt a lot more enthused and confident about doing this program as thoroughly as possible after our conversation…

Today was a huge success, both inside and outside the classroom. Interpersonally advancing professionally, I’m on the road to finally conquering my issues conquering my over analyzing of things. I feel like I’m building a solid foundation upon which I can build a sustainable and lasting recovery…

My time in sauna was replete with highs and lows. There were times when I got so angry and felt so unfairly treated that I was ready to quit the entire program. Thanks to the wonderful staff that through understanding and empathy we able to calm me down and help me get through those times. Finally towards the end of sauna I began feeling ecstatic and inevitably happy. My final realization was that I was no longer on these “highs” or “lows” but rather in a much more relaxed  and  controlled “middle” state where I could react appropriately to the various stimulants. What’s more I no longer feel as effected by what others say to or about me. Overall I am much healthier and more confident physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually.

Drug Detox

Narconon Fresh Start Drug DetoxificationThe Narconon Fresh Start drug rehab programs use a method called the New Life Detoxification Program. This highly specialized drug detox program helps clients rid their bodies of any drug toxins and drug metabolites left behind in their fatty tissues from their substance abuse. While over the years there has been some controversy on this specific method of drug detox, medical professionals and researchers agree it is a safe and effective method of total purification from drugs, alcohol and other environmental toxins.

This drug detox method is a precise protocol recognized for mobilizing fat-stored toxins and enhancing their elimination while restoring metabolic balance. The protocol has long been established as safe. Publications over the past two decades also show that this drug detox regimen can improve memory, cognitive functions, immunity factors and one’s overall general physical condition.

The New Life Detoxification method is a specific standardized protocol and includes the following:

  • A daily regimen of physical exercise
  • Immediately followed by forced sweating in a sauna at 140-180°F for two-and-a-half to five hours with short breaks for hydration to offset the loss of body fluids and cooling
  • Nutritional supplementation centered on gradually increasing doses of crystalline niacin (nicotinic acid) to promote lipid mobilization of stored toxins and stimulate circulation.
    • Administration of additional vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and oils includes vitamins A, D, C, E, B complex, B1; multi-minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and iodine; sodium and potassium; and a blend of polyunsaturated oils including soy, walnut, peanut, and safflower.

Each of these drug detox components has biologic roles that support healing and the integrity of physiological systems. The New Life Detoxification method addresses physiological systems associated with detoxification, cellular repair, immune processes, and neural and endocrine function.

“Within just a few days to a week of doing the body cleansing and purification process, the participants have color back in their face, their eyes are brighter, their energy level increases and they are sleeping well at night, waking up the next morning feeling refreshed. The mood swings from anger to depression and general uncomfortability and anxiety levels diminish and many will say they feel more centered and balanced and more themselves again. Many of the participants will say that they have not felt this good, healthy, and alive since some earlier pleasurable time in their life when they were playing sports or other athletic activity. Our staff and counselors will generally see an increased willingness and motivation in the program participant which helps set them up for the next sections of the program dealing with the underlying issues and transgressions. All of the above positive effects are of course side benefits to the real reason and result of the New Life Detoxification Program, which is to eliminate future drug cravings and relapses on drugs or alcohol which is a huge accomplishment.” – Narconon Fresh Start
