Addiction Recovery: Drug Rehab is a Not Always a One Shot Deal

Like many other chronic health issues, drug addiction rehabilitation can take several attempts before finding the right treatment and having lasting success. While some people are able to end their addiction by going “cold turkey” or after their first time to drug rehab, there are many people who need more than one time in treatment to find lasting sobriety. For these individuals, multiple  enrollments in drug rehab is not a sign of weakness or inability to achieve recovery; instead, their need to go through different treatment programs implies that they did not receive enough treatment initially, or, that the program they attended didn’t address all of their issues. This left the client with unresolved underlying issues, making them more susceptible to relapse.

For the majority of addicted people, long-term inpatient drug rehabilitation is needed to put an end to their addiction problems. However, most addicted people choose outpatient or short-term programs because they are more economical and take less time out of their life. While outpatient drug rehab programs and short-term treatment has a place in the field of recovery, they are not ideal solutions for long-term and/or heavily addicted individuals. A person who has been struggling with an addiction problem for some time needs a while to fully withdraw from the substance(s) they are dependent on, time to uncover the underlying issues that drove them to use and time to develop new ways of handling life and daily stress without turning to drugs or alcohol. The process of withdrawal can last several days to over a week and must be completed before the individual is ready to address the personal issues that drove them to use. It takes time for the recovering person to learn, practice and perfect their new life skills; making long-term drug rehab programs an ideal solution.

Is long-term treatment necessary for you?

How do you know the right length of treatment to help you end you drug addiction issues? It can be difficult to decide when there are so many programs out there all offering different treatment methods and running for various lengths of time. Look at it this way, you didn’t develop you addiction troubles overnight and expecting to end them quickly is just not going to happen. While short-term programs are effective for certain types of addiction problems they severe a very specific purpose. A person who has only recently started to abuse drugs or alcohol or who has recently relapsed after time in a drug rehab may do well enrolling in a short term program because they only need some guidance and education on their addiction problem. For a person who has been abusing drugs or alcohol for a while (think 6 months, a year or longer) a long-term drug rehab program is necessary to be able to stop once and for all. Long-term treatment gives the recovering individual the time they need to withdraw completely from the substance(s), learn about addiction and address the underlying problems that drove them to abuse drugs or alcohol. The time spent in long-term drug rehab allows the person to practice living day to day as a sober person solving life’s problems without turning to drugs or alcohol as a solution or escape. It is this practice and time spent away from drug using culture that makes a lasting impression on the recovering person and allows them to view themselves as clean and sober individual who is capable of living a sober lifestyle. Short changing yourself by choosing a short-term drug rehab because it seems to be the quickest and most cost effective type of treatment is problem not going to give you the results you are looking for.

Short Term Drug Rehab vs. Long Term Drug Rehab

Short term drug rehab programs typically run 28 to 30 day. The majority of recovering individuals find that the real benefit of going to a short term drug rehab is getting away from the drugs they are dependent on for a month or so. These types of programs are usually designed to adhere to health insurance policies parameters but fall short of helping the addicted individual find lasting sobriety. A short term drug rehab would be an ideal choice for an individual who has not developed a full-fledged drug or alcohol addiction, more of a substance abuse problem. The short term length of the rehab program gives them the break from the drugs they have been abusing and helps guide them back onto the right path. However, for most addicted individuals a short term drug rehab program is simply not enough time to make the difficult changes necessary in their thoughts and actions.

Long term drug rehab programs come in numerous forms including 12-step programs, simultaneous diagnosis of secondary mental conditions to residential treatment centers. This type of treatment can run anywhere from a few months to a year and a half for some of the more intensive and long-term residential therapeutic communities. These types of drug rehab programs are more intensive than short-term programs because the recovering individuals focus on their rehabilitation from addiction around the clock for an extended period of time. Long-term drug rehabs statistically have much higher success rates than short term drug rehabs. Research into the field of addiction recovery has shown that 90 days in treatment is when the great majority of clients begin to achieve real and lasting results from the program they are enrolled in. Any shorter than this and statistically the recovering individual’s chances at lasting rehabilitation are substantially decreased.

Narconon Fresh Start is a group of drug rehab programs that are entirely drug-free, long-term, residential treatment facilities. Their program is neither religious, 12-step nor a medical or psychiatric based method of rehabilitation; the Narconon Fresh Start rehabilitation philosophy is based on confronting and locating the specific causes of addiction and the many behaviors associated with it and resolving them. Their drug rehab centers treat addiction for what it really is and provide their clients with an actual solution to ending the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction. The Narconon Fresh Start program provides true rehabilitation that builds the client up and shows them that they are powerful, not powerless over their addiction problem.
